Peterborough College Appoints Former Championship Player Alex Hales as New Head of Rugby
With over 10 years of experience as a player, coach and educator, Alex brings a wealth of expertise and enthusiasm to the College’s Rugby and Sports Programmes.
Having competed at a high level in both National One and Championship rugby, they have gained invaluable experience of elite performance environments while continuing to play competitively. Alongside their playing career, Alex has built an impressive track record in coaching and education. They have worked within the Northampton Saints Player Pathway, supporting the development of talented young players and helping them progress through one of the country’s leading rugby development systems.
Academically, Alex holds a Degree in Physical Education and School Sport and has complemented this with a wide range of specialist coaching and performance qualifications. These include the RFU Level 3 Coaching Award, alongside recognised qualifications in Sports Coaching, Sports Performance, Sports Fitness and Nutrition, and Sports Analysis. This diverse skill set allows them to deliver a modern and holistic approach to athlete development, combining technical coaching with expertise in performance, conditioning, nutrition and game analysis.
As Head of Rugby, Alex is passionate about creating an ambitious and inclusive rugby programme that enables students to excel both on and off the field. Their approach focuses on developing not only skilled athletes but also confident, resilient and well-rounded individuals who are prepared for future opportunities in sport, higher education and employment.
In their role as Sports Lecturer, Alex is equally committed to providing students with engaging, industry-relevant learning experiences, drawing upon real-world coaching and performance environments to bring lessons to life.

Sport has shaped my life both professionally and personally, and I am passionate about sharing that experience with the next generation. My aim is to build a culture of excellence, enjoyment and opportunity, helping students develop the skills, knowledge and confidence to achieve their ambitions in sport and beyond.”
With a strong background in performance rugby, education and athlete development, Alex is set to play a key role in driving the continued success and growth of sport at Peterborough College.
