At our organisation, we believe that every young person deserves the opportunity to thrive. We know that many of our students and individuals balance their daily lives with looking after a loved one. If this sounds like you, please know that you are not alone, and support is always available.
What is a young carer?
A Young Carer is anyone under the age of 18 who provides care, assistance, or support to another family member. This could be a parent, sibling, grandparent, or other relative who has a:
- Physical disability
- Mental health condition
- Chronic or long-term illness
- Substance or alcohol misuse issue
This care might involve practical chores (cooking, cleaning, shopping), physical care (helping someone get dressed or move around), or providing vital emotional support.
What is a young adult carer?
A Young Adult Carer is someone aged 18 to 25 who takes on these same caregiving responsibilities. This is a crucial transition period where balancing care with higher education, finding a job, or moving into independent living can become extra challenging.
