Royal Navy Workshops Bring ‘Silent Service’ and High-Tech Engineering to Life for Students

14 April 2026

Students gained an exclusive insight into the world of maritime defence this week as the Royal Navy Submarine Service and the Royal Navy Attract Team arrived on campus to deliver a series of high-energy, hands-on workshops.

The visit transformed a standard day of study into a deep dive into the “silent service”, giving students from the Uniformed Public Services, Air and Defence and Travel and Tourism a realistic look at what it takes to live and work at the forefront of national security.

The Submarine Service team broke down the myths of life beneath the waves. Rather than just discussing the technical specs of the fleet, they focused on the human element, the shared camaraderie and the unique mental resilience required to thrive in a submarine environment. Students were given a transparent view of the career roadmap, exploring everything from specialist pay structures to the rapid promotion pathways available to those who join the fleet.

Students also spent time with the Royal Navy Attract Team, who challenged them with an immersive STEM workshop. The main hall was filled with engineering activity as students worked in teams to design and build technical transport systems. This wasn’t just a classroom exercise; it was a test of teamwork and critical thinking, forcing students to translate their public service studies into real-world engineering solutions under pressure.

For many, the visit turned a vague interest into a tangible career goal, demonstrating that, whether through engineering, logistics, or underwater operations, the Royal Navy offers a high-tech, high-impact future for those ready to step up.
