Remembering Rolas Saskovas

Peterborough College are deeply saddened by the passing of one of our recent alumni, Rolas Saskovas.

Peterborough College has created a lasting tribute to former Art and Design student Rolas Saskovas, celebrating his creativity and the impact he had on those around him.

A piece of Rolas’s artwork has been installed at the College alongside a memorial plaque, creating a permanent space where his creativity can continue to be seen and appreciated by students, staff and visitors.

Rolas was a thoughtful, respectful and kind-hearted member of our College community and was much loved by his Art and Design cohort. This special tribute ensures that his memory and creativity will remain part of Peterborough College for years to come. 

Staff who worked closely with Rolas have shared their memories below: 

Digby Checksfield – 

Rolas was a thoughtful, kind, positive person. I remember Rolas as someone who persisted with what he wanted to do in spite of obstacles and personal challenges. As his tutor in year one, I had many conversations about finding his way in his studies as well as dealing with life challenges a young person faces. His love of motorbikes permeated through all his artwork and was a driving focus behind the artistic work he made.  Rolas had been accepted to a degree to study architecture. He would have brought a sensitive, clear vision to that course, and I am very sad I will never get to see the buildings designed by Rolas, no doubt inspired by his love of biking.

Romina Pinto – 

When we first introduced the trip to Florence, Rolas was one of the first to sign up for the trip; he was so excited to visit Italy and very excited about the food!! I will never forget Rolas’s kindness and patience with another learner who was anxious and nervous on the trip, actively holding their hand as the plane took off. 

Rolas was always so respectful in sessions, actively engaging with tasks, undertaking his artwork with his helmet sitting proudly with him on the desk. Rolas’s final artwork for the end-of-year show was stunning, and the way he exhibited his work really showed his talent and eye for the finishing touch. I would say to him it reminds me of the” Borg, ” to which he would reply, “What’s that?” This is where I showed my age and introduced him to Star Trek; he found this amusing. Rolas was an absolute pleasure to teach

Holly Riley – 

Rolas was a good-natured and kind-hearted person; he was always the personal admin for his closest friends. He let me know if someone’s bus was late or if someone was feeling unwell. I encouraged Rolas often to challenge himself, and being the relaxed person he was, he would ‘think on it’ before making any big decisions. We talked about anime he was interested in, as well as games he was playing and how these ideas tied into his work in some cyberpunk way. I always knew when he was walking around Fisher Building, due to his leather biking gear’s signature squeak. His final piece epitomises his love for creating and for motorcycles. Enlisting the help of his friend to help him add highlights, his work really stood out at the end-of-year show, as he exhibited it alongside his best friend. I believe the final showcase was a significant step in his personal development, and he was proud of his work. 

Crystal Brook-Davis – 

Rolas was a kind and caring person who naturally took a ‘big brother’ role with his friends.  When we visited Florence, he made sure others felt safe when they were in unfamiliar environments, often putting their comfort and enjoyment above his own.  I remember him as a happy, smiley person who came alive when speaking about his passions – which were intertwined with his artwork.  An incredible loss, and I’m glad to have the memories that I do of him.

Matt Young – 

Rolas moved through life with an easygoing grace and a protective, big-brother spirit which he showcased each day when he came to college. His attitude towards life was evident during our college trip to Florence; his protective instincts shone through, which was shown by the tremendous amount of support towards the other students who may have been shy and worried about visiting another country. Rolas took it upon himself to be there for those students, which is only a small part of how he cared for other people. He was a constant anchor for his friends, ensuring everyone felt safe when they were navigating daily struggles and college life. His bright energy and genuine warmth were evident when he walked into the room. His final exhibition, created with passion and displayed alongside his best friend, was a testament to his incredible personal growth, which increased from the start of his academic journey at the college. Though he is deeply missed, the kindness and creativity he gave us will never be forgotten. His memory will live on through the amazing friendships he has made, and his passion for life will be remembered always.

Staff and students of Peterborough College extend their deepest sympathies to Rolas’ family and loved ones. His memory will be cherished by all who had the privilege of working alongside him.
