What can this course lead to?

The CAVA Access Diploma is QAA recognised and is accepted by UK universities nationwide as a standard entry qualification for most degree courses. Each Access course and pathway is specifically designed with university progression in mind, and tutors will guide you through the HE application process.

Who is it for?

If you are a mature student with the ambition to go to university but lack the level 3 qualifications, an Access to Higher Education course is a fantastic solution.

The Access to Higher Education course is a 1-year full-time course specifically for motivated individuals aged 19 and over who wish to go on to study a degree, progress in their career, or simply extend their knowledge after being out of formal education for some time.

What is covered?

You will study a range of subjects at Level 3 in core maths and science. You will also be trained in study skills to help you make the most of your time on the course and to become an effective undergraduate at university. Units are highly practical so you will become proficient in good laboratroy practice. Core subject-specific units include:

  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Physics
  • Numerical Data and Statistical Analysis
  • Microbiology

You will also choose from a range of further units to suit your progression needs, which includes topics in:

  • Health and Disease
  • Advanced Chemistry
  • Mensuration and Trigonometry
  • Anatomy & Physiology
  • Quantum and astrophysics
  • Forensic investigation
  • Zoology and ecology
  • Psychology and Mental Health

Towards the end of your course, you will complete an individual research point in a topic area that interests you.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

For entry onto the Access to Higher Education Science and Health course students must hold a: Level 2 Science qualification (such as GCSE Science at grade A*/9 – C/4, BTEC Level 2 in Applied Science at Merit or Pre-Access Certificate with core science content) and GCSE English and Maths at grade A*/9 – C/4.

Foreign equivalents and Functional Skills Level 2 can be considered on a case by case basis.
