Student-Led Transformation: Peterborough College’s ‘Garden of Sanctuary’ Receives Major Refurbishment

11 June 2026

A tired corner of the Peterborough College campus is being breathed into new life, thanks to the vision of one exceptional ESOL student and a collaborative effort across several college departments.

The Garden of Sanctuary, located behind the Brick House, is currently undergoing a significant refurbishment. The centerpiece of the project involves replacing an aging, oversized “produce bed” with three sleek, lower-height individual beds. This new design is specifically engineered for inclusivity, ensuring that the space is accessible from all sides, including for wheelchair users, allowing students of all physical abilities to engage in hands-on horticulture.

The catalyst for this project is Zia, an ESOL student from Afghanistan. A dedicated volunteer who spends hours maintaining the garden outside of his required coursework, Zia’s passion for cultivation has turned him into a true ambassador for the college.

Despite facing personal adversity, Zia’s commitment to the garden has inspired a wave of support. His vision, first shared during a study session, has now bridged multiple departments:

  • Carpentry: Providing the essential skill set to rebuild the garden structures.
  • Additional Learning Support: Partnering to ensure the space meets the needs of inclusive learning.
  • College Staff: Donating essential tools, including kneelers, gloves and a hosepipe, to support the garden’s upkeep.

The Garden of Sanctuary serves a purpose far beyond growing vegetables. It is a vital hub for:

Mental Health & Solace: Providing a quiet space for mourning, reflection and prayer.

Life Skills: Teaching students about green principles and the rewards of hard work.

Community: Encouraging the sharing of fresh produce and promoting healthy eating among staff and students.

Zia represents everything one hopes to see in a student. The ability to overcome barriers, a personality that others find inspiring and the drive to use every opportunity to be truly exceptional,” says Learning Support Practitioner, Pedro.

Zia’s leadership and contagious smile have already earned him recognition as a runner-up in two Student Awards 2026. By championing this refurbishment, he has challenged the college community to be the best versions of themselves.

As the Carpentry team prepares to move on-site, the Peterborough College community looks forward to a space that brings people closer together, closer to nature and serves as a lasting testament to the power of a single student’s initiative.

Peterborough College is committed to providing an inclusive and inspirational learning environment, nurturing the skills and mental well-being of all students through practical, hands-on experience and community-led projects.
