Introduction to Engineering Skills

  • Course Type: Short course / introductory engineering skills course

What can this course lead to?

This course can support progression to further engineering study, apprenticeships or entry-level roles in engineering and manufacturing. Progression routes may include:

  • Engineering Level 2 or Level 3 courses
  • Engineering apprenticeships
  • T Level Engineering and Manufacturing pathways
  • Further study in mechanical engineering, manufacturing or maintenance
  • Entry-level employment in engineering, manufacturing or workshop environments

Who is it for?

This course is designed for learners who are interested in engineering and would like to develop an understanding of the sector, the types of jobs available and the practical skills used in engineering workshops.

Learners will be introduced to key areas of engineering including health and safety, engineering drawings, CAD, fitting, turning, milling and basic electronics. The course combines classroom-based theory with practical workshop activity, helping learners build confidence in using tools, equipment and engineering processes safely.

Students will also develop employability skills, including CV writing and interview preparation, to support progression into further study, apprenticeships or employment in the engineering sector.

What is covered?

The course covers the following areas:

Introduction to the Engineering Industry

Learners will explore the engineering sector, different types of engineering jobs, workplace expectations, health and safety and risk assessments. They will also be introduced to the learning systems used on the course, including Google Classroom.

Engineering Drawings

Learners will be introduced to engineering drawings, including first and third angle projection, isometric drawings, common drawing conventions and abbreviations.

Computer-Aided Design

Learners will use Onshape to develop basic CAD skills. This will include setting up an account, using basic controls, understanding key CAD terms and producing simple engineering drawings.

Fitting Skills

Learners will develop practical fitting skills in the workshop. This will include workshop health and safety, identifying and using tools, understanding datum points, marking out, measuring accurately and manufacturing a drill gauge.

Design and Manufacture Project

Learners will design a keyring using CAD and fitting skills, with the potential to explore 3D printing where available.

Turning Skills

Learners will be introduced to safe lathe operation, turning tools, workholding and basic turning techniques. They will manufacture a simple mallet, including handle, head, inserts and assembly.

Milling Skills

Learners will be introduced to safe milling machine operation, cutting tools, workholding and basic milling techniques. They will manufacture a simplified small spirit level, including blocking out, drilling, reaming, producing slots, angles, polishing and creating a plug for the vial.

Electronics and Soldering

Learners will study basic electronics safety, component identification, circuit board types and soldering health and safety. They will practise soldering, test components and manufacture a basic circuit kit.

Employability Skills

Learners will develop up-to-date interview skills, review current CV writing approaches and complete a CV ready for job or apprenticeship applications.
