Who is it for?
This course is aimed at adult learners who are looking to gain a recognised qualification in catering. It provides an excellent stepping stone into the hospitality industry, equipping learners with the essential skills and knowledge needed to begin their career in the sector.
What is covered?
The course will cover a range of practical and industry-focused units designed to develop learners’ knowledge and skills in catering and hospitality. These include:
- Food Preparation
- Healthy Diets, and Cooking
- Customer Service in the Hospitality Industry
- Health and Safety
- Food Safety Awareness in Catering
- Introduction to the Hospitality Industry
Together, these units will provide learners with a strong foundation and an understanding of the key skills and standards required to work effectively within the catering and hospitality sector.

No GCSEs or previous formal qualifications are required. Applicants should have a good understanding of English and a genuine passion to pursue a career within the catering and hospitality industry.
The course will be delivered within our realistic working environment hairdressing salons, providing learners with the opportunity to develop their skills in a professional and practical setting. Learners will take part in practical lessons where they will practise and develop a range of hairdressing techniques, allowing them to gain valuable hands-on experience. In addition to practical sessions, weekly distance-learning homework will be set, including written and assignment-based tasks to support and reinforce the knowledge gained during the course.This course will be delivered every Friday 9:00am – 13.30pm.
Assessment will take place throughout the course and will include both practical and written tasks. Practical assessments will be carried out in college during practical lessons. Learners will also be assessed through weekly homework and assignment-based tasks, which will be completed through distance learning to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of the course content.
Learners will be required to purchase a catering uniform and a set of professional knives. The total cost for the required uniform and equipment is approximately £400. Financial support may be available to support you with these costs.
Although work experience is not a formal requirement of the course, learners are encouraged to seek employment or work opportunities within the hospitality and catering industry while completing their qualification. Gaining experience in the workplace alongside their studies can be highly beneficial, helping learners to enhance their practical skills, build confidence, gain valuable industry experience, and apply the knowledge and skills developed throughout the course in a real working environment.
The course left me fully equipped and ready to start working at the Royal Automobile Club in London. I really appreciate all the help I’ve got from the staff at Peterborough College – they were always ready to answer any questions and I really enjoyed the course.
