Who is it for?
If you enjoy practical work and working outdoors with animals, then this course could be for you. The course will provide you with a basic introduction to working with animals.
You will have access to a variety of animals including pet animals, farm animals and exotic animals, enabling you to build up confidence along with your practical skills.
What is covered?
Throughout the course you may have the opportunity to work at a local animal visitor centre. There will also be opportunities for subject related trips and visits. You will learn:
- Skills to assist in practical animal husbandry
- Maths and English skills
- Health and safety in the workplace
- Assist with maintaining health and wellbeing of animals
- Assist with handling and accommodation of animals
- Introduction to wildlife and conservation
- Assist with feeding and watering animals
- Assist with handling and restraint of animals

2 GCSEs at grade 2/E or above including English and maths, and evidence of an interest in the subject through previous experience with animals.
Your tutor will assess you by observing your practical skills during the sessions, additionally workbooks, discussions, video/voice recordings, production of photographs, posters and leaflets will be used to assess you. Two mandatory units are externally set assessments by the awarding body. Your tutor will also provide you with feedback to develop your skills and knowledge to industry standards.
You will be required to buy protective clothing such as safety boots, work clothes and water proof outdoor clothing. Stationery such as pens, pencils, a writing pad and folder will also be essential. Visits to relevant animal organisations will be arranged throughout your course, the total cost for entry fees and transport will be required to be paid in advance.
