Travel and Tourism Students Take To The Skies with Immersive Aviation Training.

12 March 2026

Level 3 Travel and Tourism Students from Peterborough College recently traded their classroom desks for the hangar, heading to the Air and Space Institute (ASI) for a rigorous, hands-on Cabin Crew and Airline Ground Services training day.

The trip centred on a fully equipped Airbus A320, giving students a rare, up-close look at the mechanics of the aviation world. While much of their coursework focuses on travel theory, this experience allowed them to witness the complexity of real-world ground operations and the precision required for efficient aircraft turnaround procedures.

The day was specifically designed to let students “live as a crew member”, immersing them in high-pressure, realistic scenarios that bridged the gap between their studies and their future careers. Throughout the session, participants rotated through a series of essential duties that defined a typical day in the industry. This included conducting professional crew briefings, performing meticulous pre-flight safety checks, managing passenger boarding, and delivering safety demonstrations in a live cabin.

Travel and Tourism Tutor, Alexander Ogunjobi, said: I was pleased to see how our students moved beyond the textbook during their visit to the Air and Space Institute, exploring everything from the lower fuselage and engine cowlings to the flight deck and cabin operations. Seeing these aircraft operations firsthand, in a facility that trains current airline staff, is how we prepare the next generation of aviation experts.

Beyond the passenger experience, students gained technical insight into cockpit operations and practised high-stakes emergency evacuations. These drills are essential for sharpening the quick-thinking and communication skills required to ensure passenger safety in any environment. By stepping out of the college and onto the aircraft, the students have gained the practical confidence needed to become the next generation of travel professionals.

This immersive training day is part of Peterborough College’s ongoing commitment to providing students with industry-standard experiences, ensuring they are fully prepared for the fast-paced demands of the global travel and tourism sector.
