Saving Lives through Personal Development: Water Safety Week a Huge Success!
Peterborough College has officially wrapped up one of the most vital events in the Personal Development calendar: Water Safety Week.
With the warmer weather approaching, the focus shifted from “Democracy” to “Safety.” The engagement from learners across the campus was outstanding, highlighting the importance of staying vigilant around open water.
A significant thank you goes out to the teams from Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service and Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue. Their expert-led sessions were powerful and straight-talking, resonating deeply with the student body.
Having frontline professionals share real-world experiences brought a level of gravity to the classrooms that was truly impactful. These sessions moved beyond theory, providing students with a raw and honest look at water-related risks.
The goal of the week was simple but lifesaving. Thanks to the support provided in the classrooms, learners are heading into the summer months equipped with three non-negotiable rules:
Don’t Jump In: Cold water shock is a silent killer that can affect anyone, regardless of swimming ability.
Float to Live: If someone finds themselves in the water unexpectedly, they should fight the urge to thrash. Instead, lean back and float.
Stay on the Bank: Never jump in to rescue someone else. Call 999 and look for a throw-line or flotation aid.
The heartbreak that water-related tragedies can bring to a college community is well-known. This initiative ensures that safety education is a priority, empowering students to make informed decisions when near water.
Thank you to all the mentors, curriculum staff and the Fire & Rescue teams for making the week so meaningful and helping to keep the community safe.
