Peterborough College Students Take A Deep Dive into York’s Heritage Tourism Ahead of English Tourism Week
Ahead of English Tourism Week (13th – 22nd March) Level 3 Travel and Tourism students from Peterborough College recently embarked on an immersive industry visit to York to explore the city’s world-class heritage attractions.
This practical excursion provided a unique opportunity for our learners to step outside the classroom and see first-hand how historic landmarks operate as major drivers for the UK’s modern tourism economy. The immersive walk allowed students to explore how history drives modern tourism, moving from the haunting ruins of St. Mary’s Abbey to the panoramic heights of Clifford’s Tower.
Amber Sutton (Level 3 Travel Student): “Trading the classroom for a field trip let me actually see York’s heritage firsthand instead of just reading about it. It was a huge change to move past the textbooks and explore how sites like Jorvik use immersive ‘edutainment’ to connect with people. Honestly, it was a breath of fresh air that made the whole tourism industry feel real rather than just theoretical.”
By engaging directly with landmarks like the York City Walls and The Jorvik Viking Centre, our learners gained a practical masterclass in the economic and cultural impact of the heritage sector, a core objective as we promote the department alongside key stakeholders like VisitBritain, VisitEngland and Discover Peterborough.
This successful expedition was a true team effort across Inspire Education Group. As we look ahead to celebrating #EnglishTourismWeek26, it is fantastic to see our Peterborough students engaging so deeply with the national tourism landscape and preparing for their future careers in this vital industry.
