Peterborough College Empowers Students During National Careers Week

6 March 2026

Students at Peterborough College were given a head start on their professional journeys this week as the college hosted a comprehensive series of workshops and industry talks to mark National Careers Week.

Organised by Careers Advisors Matthew Webb and Helen Ferguson, alongside HE Engagement Officer Ruth Hovell, the Main Hall was transformed into a hub of professional development. The week-long event aimed to bridge the gap between education and employment, offering students direct access to industry experts and practical recruitment advice.

The week kicked off with a focus on essential “employability” skills. Ruth Hovell led sessions on mastering interview techniques, while Helen Ferguson and Matthew Webb provided a “CV from scratch” workshop, ensuring students could effectively market their skills to future employers. Complimenting this, Nick Reinis-Keightley from University Centre Peterborough, with the help of Daniel Hunt, a Journalism student, guided students through the skills needed to build a professional digital identity on LinkedIn, while Muskan Bains from Tilbury Douglas provided a valuable employer’s perspective on interview preparation.

The week also spotlighted specific career sectors through talks with industry professionals:

Construction: Muskan Bains and Molly Phipps from Tilbury Douglas outlined the diverse range of career opportunities available within a major construction firm.

Animal Care: Lesley Wilson from the College of Animal Welfare discussed the growing field of Animal Care Apprenticeships.

Health and Social Care: Amander Meade and Sophie Dodge from Home Straight shared the rewarding realities of working within the care sector.

Apprenticeship Routes: Paul Ward, Group Apprenticeship Recruitment Manager,  provided a deep dive into the breadth of vocational paths and apprenticeship opportunities available to students.

Throughout the week, 733 students from across Peterborough College registered for various sessions. The most popular talk drew 167 attendees, highlighting a collective dedication to professional growth and future career progression.
