Peterborough College Art and Design Students Take on Exciting Live Brief with Charters Bar
Art and Design students from Peterborough College have recently completed a live brief in partnership with Charters Bar, creating vibrant and imaginative art piece concepts for the much-loved riverside venue.
The project, which formed part of the students’ Level 3 Art and Design course, tasked them with designing and creating decorations that would complement the character and atmosphere of Charters, a bar moored along the River Nene in Peterborough.
Working to a real-world brief, students explored how their creative ideas could enhance the visual identity of a local business while developing essential professional skills. The collaboration encouraged them to consider client needs, target audiences and the practicalities of applying artwork in a public setting.

Josie Barnard
“It was really fun, definitely the biggest project I’ve ever worked on. I felt like I could do big, broad strokes and really think about what would look good in a bar and what people would want to see.”
Josie went on to explain how live briefs like this help prepare students for future creative careers:
“With a live brief, it gives you more experience actually taking into account what the client wants and how you can use your skills to give them a good piece of art. It’s still yours, but tailored to them.”
The collaboration provided students with a valuable opportunity to experience the professional design process, from concept development to presentation, while strengthening their portfolio with work connected to a real local business.
The project forms part of Peterborough College’s continued commitment to providing students with industry-led learning experiences that connect creativity with community.
