From the Boxing Ring to the Lake District: Peterborough College ESOL Students Championing Community Spirit
Farhad, Abdulazim, Salih and Ishaq, who are currently studying the ESOL course at Peterborough College, have successfully progressed through a unique local initiative that combines sport, mental health and the prestigious Duke of Edinburgh Award.
They recently completed the ‘Brothers Through Boxing’ programme, delivered by Boxing Futures in Yaxley. The non-contact boxing sessions provided more than just physical exercise; they created a vital space for the students to discuss mental health, smoking and sexual health, topics that can be challenging to navigate in a second language.
Having completed the six months of training, all four have now moved on to the ‘Chatter-Box’ programme. This next phase integrates social activities with the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award, a scheme renowned for building resilience and leadership. This prestigious scheme has seen the students trade their boxing gloves for hiking boots as they prepare for a milestone expedition: an overnight stay and multi-hour trek through the Lake District.
The students are dedicated community volunteers who frequently support local initiatives at Nene Park. For Farhad, Abdulazim, Salih and Ishaq, these activities are not just requirements for an award; they are a way to thank the community that has supported them. Reflecting on their volunteering work, the students noted the emotional impact of giving back: “It makes me feel good to give back to the community. I was volunteering in our country before I joined. I am happy when I see all the people are happy.”
As they prepare for their 3-4 hour treks in the Lake District, Farhad, Abdulazim, Salih and Ishaq are looking toward a bright future, with sights set on joining the College’s Engineering and Motor Vehicle departments once their English qualifications are complete.
