Who is it for?

This Supported Internship Programme is for young people aged 16–24 with an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) who would like to move towards employment with tailored support.

Interns gain experience in a real work environment and, where required, are supported by a Job Coach who helps break down tasks and build independence and confidence in the workplace. The programme runs throughout college holidays, and any time off must be agreed directly with the employer.

  • 35% progressed directly into paid employment
  • 100% received ongoing transition support towards employment

What is covered?

This course prepares young people with additional needs for employment through a combination of college-based learning and an unpaid work placement. Students attend college 1–2 days per week and complete a work placement 2–3 days per week.

Supported Employment Advisors work with each student to understand their interests, skills, and abilities and match them to a suitable workplace. A Job Coach provides ongoing support in the workplace, helping students build confidence and independence. Support may also include travel training, budgeting, and life skills.

Each student follows a bespoke learning package based on their goals. There are opportunities to work towards English and Maths qualifications, as well as an additional Employability qualification delivered alongside the course. The programme aims to support progression into paid employment, an apprenticeship, or further training.
