The course is set up differently from most, in that, it does not have traditional set outcomes or subjects that will be covered and there will be no qualification at the end.
Instead, we will start the year by assessing key skills in 8 areas:
- Receiving information
- Communication
- Creativity
- Problem-Solving
- Aspiration
- Positivity/Resilience
- Teamwork
- Leadership
The skills are designed to be ones that are transferable both within education and in their daily lives. Learners will work at their own individually appropriate level and throughout the year we will use a series of projects as vehicles to build and develop these skills. Throughout the year the projects will be, as much as possible, led by the learners, to give them more of a stake in what they are doing. Projects will be outward-facing, with final products designed for college-wide use to engage the community, build partnerships, and broaden perspectives. One of the first projects the learners will undertake is to create and curate their own individual website that will be used to show starting points in each of the skills, evidence of work completed, and ways to demonstrate progress.
The evidence gathered on the site could include, (but is not limited to), photographs, videos, reflective journals, written and verbal feedback, witness statements or testimonials. Alongside the projects, learners will also cover maths, English, mental and physical well-being, sports and leisure and independent living skills as well as building social skills with enrichment events.
