Who is it for?
The course is aimed at anyone working or volunteering with experience in roles that support students learning in both primary and secondary education. This qualification gives you a license to practice.
What is covered?
The units cover children and young people’s development, the requirements of safeguarding and the importance of equality, diversity, and inclusion. They also include:
- Communication and professional relationships with children, young people and adults
- Schools as organisations, including types of schools, policies and procedures and the wider environment in which they operate
- Supporting children and young people positive behaviour
- Supporting children and young people’s health & safety
- Supporting assessment of learning
- Supporting literacy & numeracy development

You will need to be working, volunteering or on practical placement as you need to show competence in both knowledge and skills. Must have experience working within a classroom and with the curriculum.
Work based so not required to attend college apart from induction and termly workshops. An approved assessor will visit you in your workplace to assess your practical competence, knowledge and understanding. You will need to submit a portfolio to show your competence in all areas of the qualification.
You will need to complete a portfolio of evidence for the selected units based on observation in the workplace, tasks you have undertaken, answers to questions associated with these units and an assignment.
A portfolio of evidence will be completed and verified by your allocated assessor. This will include written assignments, direct observations, professional discussions and reflective accounts. There will be no final examination.
An informal interview is required with the tutor before joining the course. You will also be required to undertake a numeracy and literacy screener.
