What can this course lead to?
Who is it for?
This qualification is suitable for learners who are working or volunteering in roles that support pupils’ learning within a classroom environment for a minimum of 8 hours a week, including teaching assistants, learning support assistants and special needs assistants. This qualification gives you a license to practice.
What is covered?
The units cover children and young people's development, the requirements of safeguarding and the importance of equality, diversity, and inclusion. They also include:
- Communication and professional relationships with children, young people and adults
- Schools as organisations, including types of schools, policies and procedures and the wider environment in which they operate
- Supporting children and young people with disabilities, special educational needs or where English is an additional language
- Preparing and maintaining learning environments
- Supporting learning activities and extra–curricular activities including planning and delivery
- Supporting pupils development between the ages 0–19 years

You will need to be working, volunteering or on practical placement as you need to show competence in both knowledge and skills
Work based so not required to attend college apart from induction and termly workshops. An approved assessor will visit you in your workplace to assess your practical competence, knowledge and understanding. You will need to submit a portfolio to show your competence in all areas of the qualification.
The course is assessed by observations of support practice, reflective learning journal, presentations and discussions.A portfolio of evidence will be completed and verified by your allocated assessor. This will include written assignments, direct observations, professional discussions and reflective accounts. There is no final examination.
Studying the course allowed me to secure an apprenticeship with a fostering agency, paving my path to my dream career in care. Those three years at Peterborough were the highlight of my life; I cherished every moment.
