Course Length

This is a Level 3 Apprenticeship and is equivalent to A–Levels. Please note you will be working to A–Level standard for Maths and Science.

You may choose to progress onto a Higher/Degree Level Apprenticeships, you could also apply for full–time study at university.

Technical Support Technicians, work as part of a team to provide technical support and expertise for all areas of the Engineering and Manufacturing function including communications software, test, analysis tools, measurement, off line programming, process control, performance and continuous improvement solutions, capacity planning, production scheduling/planning, product technical applications and capability, technical sales and marketing support, product development and innovation, engineering drawing, purchasing and/or supply of goods or services for engineering activities, quality control, inspection and e–commerce technologies as required.

This Apprenticeship is suitable for an individual who already has a good underpinning knowledge of engineering and industry experience as the role would require you to share your knowledge and experience with others to proactively solve problems. This course aims to develop your ability to work with minimum supervision, taking responsibility for the quality, accuracy and timely delivery of the work you undertake.

You can apply for an Apprenticeship if you are living in England, over 16 and not in full–time education. You must be in paid employment for the duration of your Apprenticeship, you cannot be self–employed or a volunteer. Employers must pay you the minimum Apprenticeship wage or more, for a minimum of 30 hours a week.

Interview Skills Assessment

All candidates will be invited to a pre interview with the Apprenticeship Recruitment Officers and will take part in an initial assessment for English and Maths. You may also be required to complete an aptitude test to assess your current skills.

We strongly recommend all candidates also complete a minimum of 2 weeks of work experience with their employer before to the start of the Apprenticeship to ensure the organisation meets your needs.

What will I need

Individual employers will set their selection criteria, but it is likely to include 5 GCSEs at grade C/4 or above including English, Maths and Science or a Technology subject; a relevant Level 2 Apprenticeship; other relevant qualifications and experience; or an aptitude test with a focus on your current skills.

This course is a hands on approach to learning so you will need to have a passion and drive for engineering as well as the ability to perform academically at A Level standard for Maths and Science.

We strongly advise you to complete a minimum of 2 weeks work experience with your employer before to the start of your Apprenticeship to ensure it is a suitable organisation for your needs. You need to be prepared to get your hands dirty.

Core skills, knowledge and behaviours include:
Core Knowledge:
• Understanding the importance of complying with statutory, quality, organisational and health and safety regulations
• Understanding the general engineering/manufacturing mathematical and scientific principles, methods, techniques, graphical expressions, symbols formulae and calculations used by engineering technicians
• Understanding the structure, properties and characteristics of common materials used in the sector.
• Understanding the typical problems that may arise within your normal work activities/environment
• Understanding approved diagnostic methods and techniques used to help solve engineering/manufacturing problems
• Understanding the important of only using current approved processes, procedures, documentation and the potential implications for the organisation if this is not adhered to
• Understanding and interpreting relevant engineering/manufacturing data and documentation in order to complete your job role.
• Understanding the different roles and functions in the organisation and how they interact.
• Understanding why it is important for an organisation to continually review their processes and procedures.

Core Skills:
• Obtaining, checking and using the appropriate documentation (such as job instructions, drawings quality control documentation)
• Working safely at all times, complying with health, safety and environmental legislation, regulations and organisational requirements planning and where applicable obtaining all the resources required to undertake the work activity.
• Undertaking the working activity correctly using the correct processes, procedures and equipment
• Carrying out the required checks (such as quality, compliance or testing) using the correct procedures, processes and/or equipment

You will also be required to learn specific skills and knowledge that are related to Technical Support Apprentices.

Specialist Knowledge:
• Understand mathematical techniques, formula and calculations used in a technical support environment
• Understand the methods and techniques used to evaluate technical data and documentation
• Understand how to identify that the data and documentation being used is current and up to date
• Understand the procedure to be used for making changes to issued documentation
• Understand where and how to source other areas of technical expertise/information to help solve technical problems
• Understand the requirements of the customer (internal/external) and support using the appropriate tools, equipment and processes.

Specialist Skills:
• Produce technical documentation that contains all the relevant and necessary data and information required for the technical support activity being carried out
• Present the technical documentation in the required format
• Ensure that codes, symbols and other references used in the technical documentation follows agreed UK/international conventions
• Save and store technical documentation in the correct format, location in accordance with organisational and/or customer requirements
• Make any changes/amendments to the technical documentation using agreed quality assurance control procedures
• Develop effective business and/or customer relationships
• Provide technical advice and guidance to others
• Contribute to the business by identifying possible opportunities for improving working practices, processes and/or procedures.

• Produce engineering/manufacturing production plans
• Obtain resources for engineering/manufacturing activities
• Obtain and control materials used in engineering/manufacturing environments
• Implement quality control/assurance systems and procedures in an engineering/manufacturing environment
• Provide technical support services on products or services to internal and/or external customers
• Produce documentation to supply or procure goods or services
• Produce off line programs for computer numerical controlled machines
• Produce programs for scanning/digitizing or co–ordinate measuring machines
• Produce programs for programmable logic control equipment
• Produce programs for industrial robot applications
• Produce engineering software tools/programs for analysis, quality, configuration management, safety assessments, system security applications
• Produce engineering drawings/models using computer aided design techniques
• (such as mechanical, electrical, fabrication, fluid power, integrated systems or services)
• Undertake complex fault diagnostic and/or condition monitoring activities on equipment, plant or services
• Carry out inspection activities on equipment/components/systems (such as mechanical, electrical, electronic, welded and fabricated.
• Check and calibrate control and test equipment used in an engineering and/or manufacturing environment.

Apprentices are expected to attend college for 3 Days a week in Yr 1 / 2 Days a week in Yr 2 / 1 Day a week in Yr 3 as part of 20% off–the–job training. Additional off–the–job training hours are expected to be completed within the workplace, however you may be asked to complete tasks at home via Google Classroom and One–file.

Please note you may also be asked to complete additional English and Maths qualifications as part of the Apprenticeship programme.

How is the course assessed

Apprentices will be assessed on the skills, knowledge and behaviours required for the Engineering Technician Standard. 

All Apprentices will be required to achieve the following qualifications:
• Level 2 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Foundation Competence)
• Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Competence) – Technical Support
• Level 3 Diploma or Extended Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Knowledge)


You will also be assessed throughout your Apprenticeship by the course tutors whilst at college and have a skills Assessor available through the length of the Apprenticeship to guide and support you. You will have to submit coursework and assignments for the work covered at college and also provide evidence of the work you are doing in the workplace to bring you up to the correct level of competency to enable you to be put forward for the end–point assessment.

What can this course lead to

Completion of the Apprenticeship is designed to be recognised by relevant Professional Engineering Institutions at the appropriate level of professional registration (EngTech).

You may choose to progress onto a Higher/Degree Level Apprenticeships, full time learning programme or a range of further employment opportunities.

Other details

Reality check: 
As a Technical Support Apprentice you will be expected to have developed your engineering knowledge and experience to a high level in order to be able to support others. You may be expected to do shift work in challenging environments both inside and outside although this is mainly an office based role. You could be speaking to individuals from other sites in different countries or to colleagues with minimal engineering knowledge and experience so you need to be able to adapt your communication to suit their needs.

You could be expected to work late night and weekends to accommodate business needs. An Apprentice will work on average 37 hours a week however this may vary throughout the year dependent on seasonal trends and workloads. Engineering Apprentice average salary varies between £12,000 and £28,000 a year depending on skills and experience. The course is a combination of academic knowledge – you will be working to A–Level standard for Maths and Science, and valuable hands on experience. If you are considering a pathway to university this course would be a suitable stepping stone however it would also allow you to build your understanding from the shop floor which is invaluable for many employers.

As an employed status Apprentice you will:
• Earn a wage – the national minimum wage for Apprentices is £4.15 an hour, although many Apprentices earn more than this. Please note you must be a paid employee of the business, you cannot be self–employed or a volunteer.
• Have a contract of employment – this must be given to you at the start of your employment.
• Get paid holidays – these will be detailed in your contract of employment.
• Receive training – it is crucial to the success of your Apprenticeship that your employer supports you with regular training. The Apprenticeship standard states you must complete a minimum of 20% off–the–job training which can also include training at Peterborough Regional College and training within the workplace. You will also be expected to build a portfolio and complete tasks on One–file and Google Classrooms.
