Do you enjoy practical work and want to develop a skill you can use in different ways?
Are you looking to start a career within the carpentry industry or upskill for an existing role?

Carpenters and Joiners make and install wooden fixtures and fitting as part of construction projects, you will need to have an eye for detail. Good Maths skills are required for measuring and working out angels, as you will be following technical drawings and plans. This Apprenticeship covers all the basics of site carpentry and bench joinery. Dependent on the route you will learn either, work on site or in a joinery workshop constructing a variety of different wooden products.

Interview Skills Assessment

All candidates will be invited to a pre interview and initial assessments in English and Maths with the Apprenticeship Recruitment Officers.

What will I need

What is covered

This Apprenticeship covers all the basics of site carpentry and bench joinery. Dependant on the route you take, an Apprentice will be working either on site or in a joinery workshop constructing a variety of different wooden products.

Duties will include installation of first and second fix, roofing, operating wood cutting and shaping machinery and making of doors and windows.

On your Apprenticeship you will also learn all aspects of onsite health and safety, moving and handling and the installation of a variety of wooden components into a site environment.

You will also gain nationally recognised qualifications including the Diploma in Wood Occupation (either site or bench route) and Key or Functional skills

We have a dedicated Apprenticeship Academy team who will support you throughout your Apprenticeship, monitoring progression and supporting achievement through to completion.

Apprentices are expected to attend college 1 day a week as part of 20% off–the–job training. Additional off–the–job training hours are expected to be completed within the workplace.

What can this course lead to

Successful Apprentices can continue to work within the carpentry industry, gain promotion, progress onto higher level education or start their own business. Possible job roles could include: Carpenter, Joiner, Joiner's mate and Labourer.

Learners may need to purchase uniform and/or equipment depending on the employer.

Other details

A Carpentry Apprentice will work in many different locations and could involve some travelling. This will mean early starts and sometimes late finishes. The weather is another consideration as some of the work is outside. There can be some moving and handling of heavy materials in dusty environments. An Apprentice will work on average 40 hours a week, this may vary throughout the year dependent on work load. The salary for a qualified carpenter/joiner can start at £12,000; this can rise to £28,000 for a fully qualified and experienced carpenter/joiner.

• Earn a wage – the national minimum wage for apprentices is £3.90 an hour for apprentices under 19 or over 19s in during their first year as an apprentice, although many apprentices earn more than this
