Who is it for
The HNC/HND in Civil Engineering is a full–time course at an undergraduate level. (The course is also offered part–time, please call our Information Centre on 0345 872 8722 or visit our website for further information).
It offers a broad base of civil engineering subjects with specialist options, allowing you to adapt the course to your particular career ambitions. If you are working within the civil engineering field or have ambitions of working in this area in
a professional, managerial, or technical capacity, then this course is for you.
The continued development and regeneration of towns and cities in the UK is expected to lead to a continuous demand for suitably qualified professionals across all construction and civil engineering disciplines. This qualification is equivalent to two years of undergraduate study and allows progression to a full degree. Higher Nationals are substantially coursework/project based and are designed to equip students with the knowledge, understanding and skills required for the civil engineering sector.
What will I need
Pearson BTEC Extended Diploma MMP or Diploma DM. Level 3 Grade C or above (preferably) in A Level maths and physics.
You will need an interest in this subject and a willingness to work hard. You will be required to demonstrate good time management and the ability to complete
coursework and submit to a deadline.
All applicants must show that they have a good level of spoken or written English, and if English is not your first language, you will need to demonstrate the ability to study in English.
Applicants who do not meet the standard entry criteria but have relevant work/life experience will be considered on an individual basis.
What is covered
The following HNC Civil Engineering Level 4 units are covered over one year:
• Individual project
• Construction technology
• Science and materials
• Construction practices and management
• Construction information (drawing, detailing, specification)
• Mathematics for construction
• Civil engineering technology
• Principles of structural design
The following HND Civil Engineering Level 5 units are covered over two years. You will study the HNC units above in the first year plus the following units in the second year:
• Group project (30 credits)
• Further mathematics for construction
• Geotechnics and soil mechanics
• Advanced structural design
• Transport systems in buildings
• Highways engineering
What can this course lead to
Students have gone on to careers in the civil engineering industry, either in a professional, managerial or technical capacity. Successful students may also wish to continue their studies and go on to a BSc in Civil Engineering. You may also
progress to further study towards professional body membership, such as the Institute of Civil Engineering (ICE) or the Institute of Structural Engineers (IStructE).
Edexcel Level 4 HNC (120 credits) and Edexcel Level 5 HND (240 credits) provides a nationally recognised qualification offering career progression and professional
development for those already in employment and opportunities to progress on to an honours degree programme.
