Who is it for
This is an exciting course offering advanced knowledge and skills in art and design. If you are interested in being creative, imaginative and developing your design skills
and potential then you will fi nd this course exciting and challenging. A practical alternative to traditional A Levels, this course will help you build an impressive portfolio of work to help you go on to study art or design at university or get a job in the creative industry.
Interview Skills Assessment
Initially you will be required to attend a Welcome Event, details will be provided upon application. If you have other qualifications and/or relevant experience you will be fully considered and may still be able to study for the course. At interview you will be asked to bring in a portfolio of creative work to demonstrate your skills and abilities.
What will I need
4 GCSEs at grade C/4 or above. One of these should be either art or a creative based subject. Or a level 2 qualifi cation at Merit grade in an art based subject. You must also have achieved a grade C/4 or above in English and/or maths. A portfolio of work will need to be brought to the interview.
What is covered
This is essentially a practical course giving you the opportunity to experiment and experience a range of art and design disciplines. You will study mandatory units along with specialist units. These include:
• Visual recording in art and design
• Materials, techniques and processes in art and design
• Ideas and concepts in art and design
• Communication through art and design
• Contextual infl uences in art and design
• Specialist units include graphic design, illustration, 3D design, fi ne art, fashion, textiles, print and sculpture
How is the course assessed
Assessment is continuous and an integral part of the learning process, providing opportunities to monitor your progress and identify strengths and weaknesses. Grades are given for each unit which will count towards the final grade and UCAS points.
What can this course be combined with
You will be enrolled on a study programme that includes various aspects of study that complement your main programme of study. You could re–take GCSE English and Maths or study a functional skill. You could undertake a Trinity Arts Award or work on cross–college arts projects.
What can this course lead to
This practical course will support you with moving on to higher education in subjects such as fi ne art, architecture, textiles, fashion design, illustration, shoe and accessory design, game design, graphics and craft (amongst many other choices). Or the predegree one year Foundation Diploma in Art and Design.
Recently students have achieved places at De Montfort University, Nottingham Trent University, Plymouth College of Art & Design, Anglia Ruskin University, Manchester Metropolitan University and University of Lincoln. This course can also support you with moving on to other further education courses or employment.
Are there any additional costs
• £10 deposit for an A1 portfolio locker and standard locker
• Supplying your own Art Kit – a list of essentials and recommended items is issued before induction
• Trips to galleries and museums
