Who is it for

Would you like to work in the animal care industry or progress onto higher education in an animal related subject? If so, this course could be for you. This course is also a good stepping stone onto careers such as: zoology, grooming, kennels, trainee veterinary nursing, land–based retail, supervisory/management roles and rescue centre work.

You will be required to attend a Welcome Event, details will be provided upon application.

What will I need

You will need 4 GCSEs at C/4 or above including English and preferably maths and science. A relevant level 2 qualification at Merit grade would be an alternative. You
will also need the ability to work independently, safely and have a keen interest in the theory aspects of animal management.

What is covered

Throughout the course you may have the opportunity to work at a major animal visitor centre, a grooming parlour or welfare sanctuary. You will also demonstrate your practical skills in our high quality college based outdoor enclosures and exotic
animal accommodation areas. You will learn about a wide range of animal related subjects including:

• Practical animal husbandry skills
• Animal welfare and ethics
• Work experience placement in the animal sector
• Emergency first aid
• Animal health and diseases
• Animal behaviour
• Functional or GCSE maths and English skills (if required)
• Employability, supervisory and team working skills
• Principles of health and safety
• Work related experience – (mandatory work experience
placement required)
• Health and husbandry
• Feeding and nutrition
• Animal behaviour and communication
• Animal welfare and breeding
• Biological systems of animals

How is the course assessed

Your knowledge will be assessed by submission of coursework including written assignments, discussions, and video and voice recordings, aspects of the course are externally assessed. Your tutor will also observe your practical skills during the sessions. Thorough feedback is provided to develop your skills and knowledge to industry standards.

What can this course lead to

This course provides a solid foundation for students to progress into the animal industry. It will prepare you for a variety of work in animal environments including retail outlets, animal sanctuaries, catteries, dog kennels, trainee veterinary nursing or welfare organisations. You may also wish to further your studies at a higher
level in related areas.

Are there any additional costs

You will be required to buy protective clothing such as safety boots, work clothes and water proof outdoor clothing. Stationery such as pens, pencils, a writing pad and folder will also be essential. Visits to local attractions and organisations will be arranged throughout your course and some additional entry fees may be required.
