Who is it for

The Pre–Access course is a 1 year full–time course for motivated individuals aged 18 or over who want to develop study skills and subject knowledge at Level 2 in preparation for a Level 3 Access to HE course, or who do not have sufficient qualifications to be accepted on to an Access to HE course currently.

The course will result in an NOCN Level 2 Skills for Employment, Training and Personal Development qualification (Diploma or Certificate), in addition to Level 2 English and/or maths qualifications.

What will I need

For entry on to the pre–Access course students should ideally hold Functional Skills Level 1 or above in English and maths. However, formal qualifications may not be necessary for entry to this course if you are able to demonstrate relevant industry experience or evidence of other work training.

What is covered

You will study core subjects that prepare you for Level 3 study, employment and University progression. These include:
–Maths skills
– English skills
– Investigating a Career
– Research skills
–Study skills
–Investigative Project
–Health and Safety

At the same time, you will study for Level 2 qualifications (GCSE or Functional Skills) in English and/or maths, depending on your existing qualifications. If you are aged 18 you will also be expected to complete 35 hours of work experience as part of the study programme.

How is the course assessed

You will be assessed in a variety of ways throughout the year, including examinations, coursework and formal presentation skills. All assessments are on a pass/fail basis. The qualification is validated by the Cambridge Access Validating Agency (CAVA).

What can this course lead to

This course can allow you to progress to a Level 3 course. At the college we offer Access to HE courses in Science and Health, Humanities and Social Science, Computing, Business and Engineering. After studying an Access to HE course you can progress to University and study for a degree.
