Who is it for
If you enjoy practical work and working outdoors with animals, then this course could be for you. The course will provide you with a basic introduction to working with animals. You will have access to a variety of animals including pet animals, farm animals and exotic animals, enabling you to build up confi dence along with your practical skills.
Interview Skills Assessment
You will be required to attend a Welcome Event – details will be provided upon application.
What will I need
You will need an entry level qualification or equivalent, as well as the ability to follow instructions, work safely and interact with members of the public. You must have a keen interest in working with a wide range of animals both indoors and outdoors,
in all weathers.
What is covered
Throughout the course you may have the opportunity to work at a local animal visitor centre. There will also be opportunities for subject related trips and visits. You will learn:
• Develop skills assisting in practical animal husbandry
• Maths and English skills
• Health and safety in the workplace
• Assist with maintaining health and wellbeing of animals
• Assist with handling and accommodation of animals
• Introduction to wildlife and conservation
• Assist with feeding and watering animals
• Assist with handling and restraint of animals
How is the course assessed
Your tutor will assess you by observing your practical skills during the sessions, additionally workbooks, discussions, video/voice recordings, production of photographs, posters and leaflets will be used to assess you. Your tutor will also provide you with feedback to develop your skills and knowledge to industry standards.
What can this course lead to
This course will prepare you for a variety of work in various animal industries including retail outlets, animal sanctuaries, catteries, dog kennels, animal welfare organisations or further education study in related areas. The completion of this
course (along with the achievement of English/maths) will support progression to Level 2 Animal Care.
Are there any additional costs
You will be required to buy protective clothing such as safety boots, work clothes and water proof outdoor clothing. Stationery such as pens, pencils, a writing pad and folder will also be essential. Visits to local attractions and organisations will be arranged throughout your course. The total cost for entry fees and transport will be required to be paid in advance in the fi rst term.
