Students cook their way to a better future
The achievements of nine students in a local prison, who each successfully completed NVQ Level 1 in Food Preparation, were recognised recently in a special awards ceremony held at HMP Peterborough.
The success has been facilitated through a unique partnership established between Peterborough Regional College (PRC) and HMP Peterborough.
A team of tutors from PRC has been working with the education team at the prison since January to successfully deliver the course as part of an initiative to get inmates back into education to help them with resettlement and rehabilitation.
Sarah Thorpe, Curriculum Team Manager for Hospitality and Catering said “We have developed a very close working partnership and the initiative has really boosted participation in education in the prison.” She added “It has been a real pleasure working with these students and we are very proud of them. We are particularly impressed by their level of dedication and enthusiasm.”
Jacky Wharton, Kalyx’s head of education at HMP Peterborough, said “This initiative reflects our aim to train and educate prisoners for resettlement and to provide opportunities for their rehabilitation on release from prison.”
