Who is it for?
This course leads to an internationally recognised qualification. It is aimed at students not living permanently in the UK who already have an intermediate knowledge of English and wish to improve their language skills.
Interview / Skills Assessment
An informal interview and placement test is required
What will I need?
An intermediate level of English or a pass in the UCLES Preliminary English Test.
What is covered?
The FCE (First Certificate in English) aims to help your improve your speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. You will be taught how to communicate effectively and to develop your accuracy and fluency in English.
How is the course assessed?
Mid and end-of-term assessments. Formal examinations (summer term).
Students will also have the opportunity to gain the nationally recognised Cambridge Certificate in ESOL Skills for Life (Speaking and Listening), at no extra charge.
What can this course lead to?
Students who complete the FCE course may progress onto the CAE (Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English) course.
Are there any additional costs?
• External exam fees, as set by the examining body, annually (approx £65).
• Text book (approx £30).
Students may also wish to purchase a monolingual English dictionary, a translation dictionary, and a grammar reference book (approx £100 in total).
Other details
The FCE course is available full-time or as an evening class (2 hours/week).
Students must be 16 years old before 1st September of the academic year in which the course starts.
The maximum class size is 16 students.
The course may take place at Park Crescent or the City Learning Centre
